Context

At the beginning of the 21st Century, science and technology stands at crossroads. Although it has been responsible for uplifting the lives of some people, it has also been the cause of major problems, such as environmental degradation and weapons of mass destruction, which have most devastatingly affected societies in the developing world. Where do we, as Muslim scientists and engineers, see ourselves in this situation? Islam has a vital and positive contribution to make at such a crucial juncture.

God has created humankind as His vicegerents (caliphs) on earth.

"It is He who has made you the inheritors of the earth. He has raised you in ranks, some above others, that He may try you in the gifts He has given." Quran 6:165

It is our duty as Muslims to lead the way in bringing balance to the use of science, so that the interests of all life are taken into consideration.

Though there is an abundance of individual talent in the Muslim community today, sadly it is not being utilised to further this goal. It is virtually impossible for a single person to make a significant and lasting contribution. However, by pooling together the skills and experience of individuals through professional networks, IMASE aims to focus this collective resource to serve mankind.

Knowledge without action is worthless, and action without purpose is futile. How do we act on our knowledge of science and engineering? What better way than for us to channel our talents in a constructive and practical manner to improve the state of the world

All success ultimately lies with God - we can only but try.

Where is IMASE based?

Most of our activities are based in the UK, but the outlook, makeup and participation of our members embodies the cosmopolitan quality of the Muslim peoples. As IMASE grows, we are making more frequent and effective use of international relationship.

What do I get out of IMASE?

Through IMASE's work as a human development agency, participants will build skills, contacts and be enriched with greater interaction with the realms of Ummah, Science, Technology, Research and Development. We plan to initiate and take responsibility for building better a future through recognition of our role as God's vicegerents on earth.

IMASE is an organisation that will do as much as you want it to. As such, the scope of its activities depends on your input. We aim to support activities that a local group may run, by offering them the opportunity, not only to network within its own circle of local scientists and engineers, but also with the wider international community.

How can I contribute?

This is a very important question. God has granted us all different inclinations, strengths and interests. One of the roles of IMASE is to enable Muslim societies to recognise and  better make use of the talent, resources and potential available to them.

IMASE seeks to continue building and linking a global network of learning and informed action. One way you can contribute to this end is by taking the initiative. Members are strongly encouraged to exert efforts to identify ways in which they can use their intellect and capabilities as agents of benefit. We welcome proposals of, and commitments to, initiatives that can help the vision we share.

IMASE runs seminars and workshops, the follow-ups to which involve further investigation and discussion. Forums to support these activities are arranged in the form of focus groups and Internet discussion boards.

Members are therefore encouraged to register their details, make use of the expertise network, share ideas and inform other individuals about IMASE. We always welcome students, researchers and professionals to volunteer their time, advice and skills to support us in our projects.
