Constellations - Vol. 2, No. 1, April - June 2011 Release

This is the fifth edition of Constellations and represents the first edition of our second year. To maintain relevance to contemporaneous issues, this edition explores the issue of unemployment amongst the youth of the Muslim world.
When a young person enters university, (s)he is full of hopes and dreams. However, at the current pace of development, often the world would have changed by the time they graduate. How can a young person prepare for this uncertainty? What motivates the young in this dynamic situation? These are some of the questions that leaders, parents, teachers and employers have to grapple with.
One phenomenon we address is too prevalent among Muslims, the notion that “I am always right, and the other is wrong”. This form of intellectual and spiritual arrogance hampers the progress of knowledge and understanding in our community. It was manifest recently in the accusations and intimidation levelled against a scholar’s statement that the theory of evolution was not inherently against Islamic belief.
We believe that, in order for us to progress as an Ummah, the way forward is to engage in dialogue which is effective, open and honest. This is not about right or wrong, as that is only with Allah (swt), we are more concerned with the journey and to be guided by the Almighty. One cannot have a guide if one is not humble, so if we have offended anyone, this is certainly not our intention.
