In the name of Allah, the most Merciful, the most Kind. This was the opening phrase of the scientific papers written by our eminent scholars of the past. It is easy to reminisce of this glorious era when ‘Ilm encompassed both scientific and Islamic knowledge and deem the divide that now lies between the two to be irreparable.

The fragmentation of knowledge is one of the unfortunate but inevitable consequences of the sudden explosion of scientific information that we have witnessed over the past century. It is now widely accepted that as a result, this has created a barrier that often hinders progress in the understanding of complex problems and finding solutions to unresolved questions. Within scientific literature interdisciplinary is the latest buzz-word; by definition it is bound to appear in all areas of science, however one where it is particularly recurrent is the study of evolution. For decades this field has brought together mathematicians and biologists; we propose that it may act as an interface between two even more divergent sciences.
