Islamic Environmentalities

The Quran is rich in environmental values, ethics and responsibilities. The difficulty is realising them in our current political and economic situation. Given the modern ecological crisis and global environmental change there is much work to do in this area in the realms of theology, politics, science, and everyday practice.

Three projects are currently running in this area.

Fasting not Feasting is an ongoing transnational campaign to embody the spirit of Ramadan and counter the dangerous effects of consumerism and gluttony. The Green Your Mosque workshop is a community-based event through which the religious nature of human relationships with the rest of creation is linked to the practical rhythms of Muslim life.
Transforming the Halal Meat Industry takes an islahic approach to industrial farming, consumption | desire and halal meat networks.

Fasting not Feasting Campaign website

Ramadan Mubarak to all.

Last years Fasting not Feasting pilot was a success, and is back this month with an improved collaborative web platform. We feel that a campaign against gluttony and consumerism, and for piety and transformation is an important one in the family of Ramadhan initiatives.

The new site, which can be found on www.fastingnotfeasting.org is intended to coordinate campaign related activities, carry notice of similar events around the world and host practical, inspirational and educational resources for families and organisations. Activities will include Flashmob Iftars with the homeless, strangers and refugees, Tarawihs with trees, Camping with Qu'rans.

Fasting not Feasting: Launched

The Fasting not Feasting not Feasting campaign was launched in London at the City Cicle on Friday 6th August 2010.

We will be maintaining a regularly updated microsite here as a point of reference to host resources for families and communities.

In this essay, Dr Muzammal Hussain, from LINE (London Islamic Network for the Environment) contrasts and compares the ideologies and discourse of Islam and Ecologism.

Belum Rainforest Project, Summer 2003

IMASE was approached to consider and suggest technical solutions to support a project aiming to protect the social and natural life of a large tract of Ancient Tropical Rainforest in Perak, Malaysia.

IMASE researched and submitted a technical proposal for the renewable power and wireless communications infrastructures required to establish, maintain and produce a monitoring and broadcast facility in a limited part of the Rainforest.
