  • Critical Reading Group

The Critical Reading Group (CRG) was established in Autumn 2007 as a space for Muslims from diverse backgrounds to meet and critically and playfully explore the works of important scholars and thinkers. The initiative has organised close to 100 two?hour weekly evening sessions over the past four years, engaged with an incredible array of subjects, and honed a spiritual, intellectual and practical fellowship. Its 2009 public engagement event The Iqbal Sessions can be found on YouTube.  Currently the group is widening participation and making the transition from critical reading to creative problematising.

  • Islamic Environmentalities

The Qur'an is rich in relating humanity's relations with the rest of creation. The difficulty in realising humanity's role  is apparent in our current political, environmental and economic situation. Given the modern ecological crisis and global environmental change there is much work to do in this area in the realms of theology, politics, science, and everyday practice.

Four projects are currently running in this area.

    • Fasting not Feasting is an ongoing transnational campaign to embody the spirit of Ramadan and counter the dangerous effects of consumerism and gluttony.

    • The Green Your Mosque workshop is a community-based event through which the religious nature of human relationships with the rest of creation is linked to the practical rhythms of Muslim life.

    • Transforming the Halal Meat Industry takes issue with the industrialisation of animal rearing and the ethics of ‘meat production’. See the microsite for more: www.chickenwars.tumblr.com

    • Wudhu Area Studies focuses attention, reflection and transformation of communal ablution facilities. For more visit: www.wudhu.tumblr.com
